OVERVIEW 1. Project Background and Description Nutrition education and health promotion are frequently advocate among adolescents to prevent diabetes, obesity and induce healthier behavior change. Nutrition intervention programs are often reinforce by health educators or teachers to reiterate the importance of healthier dietary practices among teenagers. This interventions are established frequently due to the nutritional vulnerability of this group. Indeed adolescents’ intense nutritional requirements for growth, along with their naivety in regard to mass media, the food industry’s marketing strategies, combined with their high concern regarding body image engender instability, insecurity and transience which may produce disordered eating among this group. Nutrition promotion and education are critical to produce a change, and as a health educator my desire is to have a positive impact in individuals’ health. I was offered a position as a nutrition counseling for adolescents during summer 2016. I am therefore taking this opportunity to create this project in order to implement it for the first time during summer camp 2016. This project is an excellent approach for me to provide my services and utilize my skills to influence adolescents to adopt healthier dietary habits. 2. Should the sale of junk food in school cafeterias be banned? In more traditional years, parents had to prepare packed lunch for their kids when going to school. However, in present times, most parents are already incapable of doing such things. This is because they lack the luxury of time with the hectic schedules that they have. Parents tend to just give money to their children to purchase what they need. Given this kind of situation, students are exposed to a variety of options and they are given the freedom to pick whatever they want. In terms of what they eat, students are tempted to choose the ones which happen to be unhealthy and low in essential nutrients like junk foods. Biography of Oliver Hazard Perry, American Naval Hero

Oliver Hazard Perry (August 23, 1785–August 23, 1819) was an American naval hero of the War of 1812, famous for being the victor of the Battle of Lake Erie. Perrys victory against the British ensured U.S. control of the Northwest. Early Years Perry was born on August 23, 1785, in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. He was the eldest of eight children born to Christopher and Sarah Perry. Raised in Rhode Island, Perry received his early education from his mother, including how to read and write. A member of a seafaring family, his father had served aboard privateers during the American Revolution and was commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Navy in 1799. Given command of the frigate USS General Greene (30 guns), Christopher Perry soon obtained a midshipmans warrant for his eldest son. The Quasi-War Officially appointed a midshipman on April 7, 1799, the 13-year old Perry reported aboard his fathers ship and saw extensive service during the Quasi-War with France. First sailing in June, the frigate escorted a convoy to Havana, Cuba where a large number of the crew contracted yellow fever. Returning north, Perry and  General Greene then received orders to take station off  Cap‑Franà §ais, San Domingo (present-day Haiti). From this position, it worked to protect and re-capture American merchant ships and later played a role in the Haitian Revolution. This included blockading the port of Jacmel and providing naval gunfire support for General Toussaint Louvertures forces ashore. Barbary Wars With the end of hostilities in September 1800, the elder Perry prepared to retire. Pushing ahead with his naval career, Perry saw action during the First Barbary War (1801–1805). Assigned to the frigate USS Adams, he traveled to the Mediterranean. An acting lieutenant in 1805, Perry commanded the schooner USS Nautilus as part of a flotilla assigned to support of William Eaton and First Lieutenant Presley OBannons campaign ashore, which culminated with the Battle of Derna. USS Revenge Returning to the United States at the end of the war, Perry was placed on leave for 1806 and 1807 before receiving an assignment to construct flotillas of gunboats along the New England coast. Returning to Rhode Island, he was soon bored by this duty. Perrys fortunes changed in April 1809 when he received command of the schooner USS Revenge. For the remainder of the year, Revenge cruised in the Atlantic as part of Commodore John Rodgers squadron. Ordered south in 1810, Perry had Revenge refitted at the Washington Navy Yard. Departing, the ship was badly damaged in a storm off Charleston, South Carolina that July. Working to enforce the Embargo Act, Perrys health was negatively affected by the heat of southern waters. That fall, Revenge was ordered north to conduct harbor surveys of New London, Connecticut, Newport, Rhode Island, and Gardiners Bay, New York. On January 9, 1811, Revenge ran aground off Rhode Island. Unable to free the vessel, it was abandoned and Perry worked to rescue his crew before departing himself. A subsequent court-martial cleared him of any wrongdoing in Revenges loss and placed blame for the ships grounding on the pilot. Taking some leave, Perry married Elizabeth Champlin Mason on May 5. Returning from his honeymoon, he remained unemployed for nearly a year. War of 1812 Begins As relations with Great Britain began to deteriorate in May 1812, Perry began actively seeking a sea-going assignment. With the outbreak of the War of 1812 the following month, Perry received command of gunboat flotilla at Newport, Rhode Island. Over the next several months, Perry grew frustrated as his comrades aboard frigates such as USS Constitution and USS United States gained glory and fame. Though promoted to master commandant in October 1812, Perry wished to see active service and began relentlessly badgering the Navy Department for a sea-going assignment. To Lake Erie Unable to achieve his goal, he contacted his friend Commodore Isaac Chauncey who was commanding U.S. Naval forces on the Great Lakes. Desperate for experienced officers and men, Chauncey secured Perry a transfer to the lakes in February 1813. Reaching Chaunceys headquarters at Sackets Harbor, New York, on March 3, Perry remained there for two weeks as his superior was expecting a British attack. When this failed to materialize, Chauncey directed him to take command of the small fleet being built on Lake Erie by Daniel Dobbins and noted New York shipbuilder Noah Brown. Building a Fleet Arriving at Erie, Pennsylvania, Perry commenced a naval building race with his British counterpart Commander Robert Barclay. Working tirelessly through the summer, Perry, Dobbins, and Brown ultimately constructed a fleet that included the brigs USS Lawrence and USS Niagara, as well as seven smaller vessels: USS Ariel, USS Caledonia, USS Scorpion, USS Somers, USS Porcupine, USS Tigress, and USS Trippe. Floating the two brigs over Presque Isles sandbar with the aid of wooden camels on July 29, Perry commenced fitting out his fleet. With the two brigs ready for sea, Perry obtained additional seamen from Chauncey including a group of around 50 men from Constitution, which was undergoing a refit at Boston. Departing Presque Isle in early September, Perry met with  General William Henry Harrison at Sandusky, Ohio before taking effective control of the lake. From this position, he was able to prevent supplies from reaching the British base at Amherstburg. Perry commanded the squadron from Lawrence, which flew a blue battle flag emblazoned with Captain James Lawrences immortal command, Dont Give Up the Ship. Lieutenant Jesse Elliot, Perrys executive officer, commanded Niagara. Battle of Lake Erie On September 10, Perrys fleet engaged Barclay at the Battle of Lake Erie. In the course of the fighting, Lawrence was nearly overwhelmed by the British squadron and Elliot was late in entering the fray with Niagara. With Lawrence in a battered state, Perry boarded a small boat and transferred to Niagara. Coming aboard, he ordered Elliot to take the boat to hasten the arrival of several American gunboats. Charging forward, Perry used Niagara to turn the tide of the battle and succeeded in capturing Barclays flagship, HMS Detroit, as well as the rest of the British squadron. Writing to Harrison ashore, Perry reported, We have met the enemy and they are ours. Following the triumph, Perry ferried Harrisons Army of the Northwest to Detroit, where it began its advance into Canada. This campaign culminated in the American victory at the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813. In the wake of the action, no conclusive explanation was given as to why Elliot delayed in entering the battle. Hailed as a hero, Perry was promoted to captain and briefly returned to Rhode Island. Postwar Controversies In July 1814, Perry was given command of the new frigate USS Java, which was then under construction at Baltimore. Overseeing this work, he was present in the city during the British attacks on North Point and Fort McHenry that September. Standing by his unfinished ship, Perry was initially fearful that he would have to burn it to prevent capture. Following the British defeat, Perry endeavored to complete Java but the frigate would not be finished until after the war ended. Sailing in 1815, Perry took part in the Second Barbary War and aided in bringing the pirates in that region to heel. While in the Mediterranean, Perry and Javas Marine officer, John Heath, had an argument that led to the former slapping the latter. Both were court-martialed and officially reprimanded. Returning to the United States in 1817, they fought a duel which saw neither injured. This period also saw a renewal of the controversy over Elliots behavior on Lake Erie. After an exchange of angry letters, Elliot challenged Perry to a duel. Declining, Perry instead filed charges against Elliot for conduct unbecoming an officer and failure to do his utmost in the face of the enemy. Final Mission and Death Recognizing the potential scandal that would ensue if the court-martial moved forward, the secretary of the Navy asked President James Monroe to address the issue. Not wishing to sully to the reputation of two nationally-known and politically-connected officers, Monroe diffused the situation by ordering Perry to conduct a key diplomatic mission to South America. Sailing aboard the frigate USS John Adams in June 1819, Perry arrived off the Orinoco River a month later. Ascending the river aboard USS Nonsuch, he reached Angostura where he conducted meetings with Simon Bolivar. Concluding their business, Perry departed on August 11. While sailing down the river, he was stricken with yellow fever. During the voyage, Perrys condition rapidly worsened and he died off the Port of Spain, Trinidad on August 23, 1819, having turned 34 that day. Following his death, Perrys body was transported back to the United States and buried in Newport, Rhode Island. Homelessness Effecting Pennsylvania In Philadelphia, homelessness is all around. On every street in the city, there will most likely be a homeless person asking for money or sleeping on the ground owning little to nothing. Homelessness is not only a major problem in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania but entirely the United States. There are so many people living on the streets, in abandoned houses, and even cars. The majority of homeless people are veterans, drug addicts, unemployed people, people who have a mental illness and teenagers who have ran away. The best solution to getting people off the streets and able to work, make money and living in a house or apartment that they can afford is for the state to give more money to homeless shelters and organizations. If the state of Pennsylvania gave more money to homeless shelters, the shelters would be able to open up their doors to more homeless people and help them get back on track. The shelters would also be able to build more shelters so they can eventually get all of homeless people off the streets. They would be able to hire more people to help out with their mission and teach the homeless way in a crash course of getting their life together. For the drug addicts, there would be rehab offered to the homeless and it would then eliminate not only homelessness in itself but also drugs on the streets. FIRE FIGHTING Essay Firefighter/Rescue Experience and TrainingIn this paper I intend to prove that I have the classroom instruction and the practical experience which qualifies for six hours of credit in the fire science field as outlined in Central Missouri State Universitys course catalog. I will show that I understand the principles of fire protection and fire prevention, and also show that I understand the chemistry of fire, the different classifications of fire and the factors contributing to fires. Ill show that I can identify hazardous materials, and techniques of fire prevention and some techniques of fire protection. My introduction to fire science began when I became employed at Thomas Hill power plant in 1985. All employees had to participate in a miniature fire school conducted by our safety coordinator. It consisted of putting out fires with a hand-held fire extinguisher and using some fire retardant foam. This class was the extent of my fire-fighting training until 1998. In 1998 my company asked for volunteers to be on their interior/structural fire brigade at Thomas Hill power plant. This forty hour course, conducted by the University of Missouri’s Fire and Rescue Training Institute, consisted of classroom training as well as practical experience in the following areas: fire concepts and behavior, personal protective equipment, self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), portable fire extinguishers, firefighter safety, hose streams and ventilation, search and rescue techniques, flammable liquids and gases, the incident command system, hazard communications, salvage and overall, fire-f ighting tactics, forcible entry, and fire fighting foam techniques. This course also met all of OSHA’s standards and regulations for CFR 1910.156. The first day of our training consisted of instructor introductions, opening remarks, and course registration. We then talked about emergency response duties and responsibilities as outlined in our plant safety procedure #15 for Thomas Hill power plant. Fire behavior was discussed and we learned about the fire triangle of fuel, heat and oxygen, and if we remove any one of these elements we put out the fire. We discussed flammable liquids and gases, learning about flash points and the difference between combustible and noncombustible elements. We discussed the upper explosive limits and lower explosive limits. After a short break we learned about the different components of personal protective equipment. This consists of bunker pants, coat, gloves, nomex hood, helmet, and boots. After learning about personal protective equipment we then had to learn how to put all of it on and move around in a practical exercise, this exercise was difficult due to the weight of the gear. Bunker gear a long with SCBA weighs around fifty-five pounds. We finished up the day with a brief discussion of the self-contained breathing apparatus. We started the second day of our training with a practical exercise using the self-contained breathing apparatus. We discussed how this apparatus protects our respiratory system, our eyes, and our face. It does this by protecting us from gas vapors, mists, dusts and powders, oxygen deficient atmospheres, and radioactive material. This apparatus is used in search and rescue, to locate and stop leaks, and for ventilation. We learned about the different components and different ways for donning the gear. With SCBA gear on, communication is sometime next to impossible, so at this point of our training we discussed hazard communication and different hand signals to use to show if we were all right, or if we were in trouble. Two thumbs up meant you were all right, waving your hands in the air meant you were in trouble, and both hands by your throat mean t you were about out of air. Before we put the units away, we also discussed safety rules, symptoms of respiratory poisoning, cleaning and sanitation and the proper procedure for storing the units. After we discussed the basics of communication, we learned about the incident command system. The incident command system was developed as a consequence of fires that consumed large portions of wildlands in Southern California in 1970. As a result of those fires, agencies saw the need to document a system, which allowed them to work together toward a common goal in an effective and efficient manner. This system was officially adopted by the California State Fire Marshals office, and the California Office of Emergency Services. It is now a common tool used by most fire-fighting agencies across the country. The system consists of procedures for controlling personnel, facilities, equipment, and communications. The incident command system is designed to be used in response to all emergencies caused by fires, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, riots, hazardous material incidence, or any other natural or human caused incidents. After lunch we had in-class training on search and rescue techniques. After the classroom training a practical exercise was conducted using self-contained breathing apparatus with a face piece that was taped over to restrict our vision. We were then directed to perform a search and rescue operation that consisted of doing a sweep of a large room and rescuing a dummy. We conducted the search using the fire-fighting rule of two men in, and two men out. We discussed the properties of hazardous materials, how hazardous materials are produced, how they are transported, how theyre stored, and some of their uses. We discussed the use of placards, the International color background symbols, and the United Nations hazard class numbers. We were also instructed on the safety awareness precautions when approaching a possible hazardous materials incident. We were taught to stay upwind and upgrade, to not attempt to drive through any vapor cloud, avoid contact with any liquids or fumes, eliminate any ignition sources, carefully observe the incident from a long-distance before approaching, watch for signs of leakage, and do not attempt to rescue injured until the situation has been assessed. We then had an in-depth discussion on handling fire hoses and fire fighting techniques. We discussed fire streams with special attention drawn to different characteristics of straight streams, narrow fog streams, and wide fog streams. We discussed different types of nozzles to be used also touching on the principles of displacement and entrainment. We talked about water pressure, water hammer, a direct attack on the fire, as well as an indirect attack. We also discussed electrical safety when using water as a fire suppressant. After our classroom training, we were dismissed outside to learn about the use of the fire truck as well as a practical exercise in the use of fire hoses and different stream pattern techniques. The on the fourth day of our training we spent most of the day in class. We discussed the importance of ventilation in fire-fighting, with special attention drawn to life safety, how it allows the firefighter to move in to find a fire, and it reduces fire extension by venting the heated gases. This also prevents the possibility of a backdraft. We learned about two ventilation methods those being natural ventilation and forced ventilation. We also discussed the importance of personal protective gear used along with SCBA. Staying away from glass, use ladders on roofs to spread out weight, stay upwind of heavy smoke, and always having an escape route is also very important. The salvage and overhaul of the fire scene was our next topic, with importance stressed in the area of good will to fire victims. The other advantages of salvage and overhaul are to prevent any further damage to the scene and also to search out and extinguish any hidden fires. After lunch we discussed fire size up, strategy, fire fighting tactics and interior fire attack. We also discussed automatic sprinkler systems, different types and their operation. We touched on different types of sprinkler heads, we talked about wet type sprinkler systems, and we also talked about automatic deluge systems. I’ve had most of my experience with the automatic deluge systems, as these are the types we have at Thomas Hill power plant and the type I have worked with for the past 15 years. Instructors then discussed portable fire extinguishers and extinguishing agents. We talked about the four classes of fire and the common fire-extinguishing agents such as water, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, and halon. After brief discussion of fire ground safety we all took a written test which we had to pass before we were allowed to go on to the next step of our training at Union Electrics fire school in St. Louis, Missouri. On the last day of our training we were allowed to fight fires at Union Electrics fire school. We fought various fires using dry chemical, water and foam. We also donned full bunker gear with SCBA and watched a fire go from incipient stages all the way through to full combustion. During this training we learned the importance of full bunker gear and SCBA as we were protected from the 1200-degree heat along with the noxious fumes of the smoke. We performed an interior fireattack on a single story building as well as a two-story building. We performed search and rescue in a blazing two-story building while we also completely ventilated the building and performed proper salvage and overhaul techniques. In doing so we practiced hazard communication techniques along with the incident command system we had learned. After student evaluations and closing remarks we concluded our forty-hour structural fire brigade training. During the past two years Ive also received formal training in a 24-h our hazardous materials class, which meets OSHA’s CFR 1910.120 requirements. Ive also received training in a confined space rescue during a 24 hour classroom/ practical training exercise that meets OSHA’s CFR 1910.146 requirements. Ive also taken a more in-depth class specifically orientated towards the incident management system. Also I’ve attended two winter fire schools at the University of Missouri where Ive had four hours of classroom instruction in each of the following areas: firefighter safety and accountability, basic fire fighting foam, multi agency responses, fire ground strategy and tactics, explosive recognition and bomb threat management, and conflict resolution. In addition to this formalized training our fire rescue team meets at least once a month to go over any further training or take any refresher courses needed to keep our certifications up-to-date. I hope this paper proves that I have received the training and possess the practical experien ce, to qualify for the three hours of credit awarded for taking the class, Introduction to Fire Science along with three more hours of credit awarded for taking the class, Industrial Fire Protection, at Central Missouri State University.
